APPRENTICESHIP/CRAFT EDUCATION
ABC Eastern PA Chapter utilizes the Contren Learning Series, which are standardized craft training curriculums developed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Craft training programs are trade specific and focus on developing your workforce.

What is apprenticeship training?

The ABC Apprenticeship program has been providing trained craftspeople for the construction industry for over twenty years. Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. ABC sponsors a U.S. Department of Labor and Veterans Administration approved Apprenticeship Program in ten commercial trades.

Trades Offered
  • Carpentry
  • Concrete
  • Electrical
  • HVAC
  • Plumbing
  • Pipefitting
  • Sheet Metal Worker
  • Telecommunications

There are 2 components to apprenticeship.

Classroom instruction - students are required to complete 144 hours of trade specific classroom instruction each year of their apprenticeship. Most apprenticeship programs run for a 4 year period. Classes are held from September through May at Lehigh Career and Technical Institute.

On the job training- students will earn while they learn! All ABC apprentices are required to work a full time job in addition to attending classes in the evening. Job responsibility will increase as the apprentice progresses through the program.

What Are The Opportunities and Income?

Opportunities in construction greatly increase with apprenticeship training. At the conclusion of the 4 year program, if all requirements have been met, the apprentice will earn his or her Department of Labor issued journeyman card.

ABC trained construction employees are paid and promoted based upon individual skills and merit, desire for individual achievement and overall performance. ABC Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter (ABC EPA) Training Council establishes and enforces a minimum wage scale for apprentices. You determine your own growth and advancement in this industry.

What are the requirements?

The minimum requirements to apply for the Apprenticeship program are: the applicant must be at least 18 years of age and should be a high school graduate or have earned their G.E.D. Certificate. Apprentices must have good math aptitude, manual dexterity and be physically fit. The recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship is without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age or physical handicap.
