The History Of Associated Builders and Contractors

Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. was founded in 1950 in Baltimore Maryland. ABC is an organization of general contractors, construction managers, design professionals, subcontractors, suppliers and associates with one main objective: to defend and promote the Merit Shop construction industry. 

There are currently 78 chapters nationwide, and over 24,000 member companies involved in Associated Builders & Contractors. The ABC Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter was founded in 1967.

ABC is a member run organization that is governed by a local board of directors.  All members of the association are eligible to serve on the board of directors or, any of the chapter committees. These chapter committees include:

Membership Committee:  Develops strategies to recruit new members; maintain high retention rate; develop prospect lists; invite prospects to every meeting; bring a new member to membership meetings or committee meetings; evaluates services provided to members.

Legislative Committee: Attends State & National Legislative events; design and affects grassroots lobbying efforts when necessary; make recommendations to the Board on issues, communicates with Representatives, Senators & Congressmen of ABC members and voice Merit Shop priorities.

Training Committee: Comprised of each of our Perr Groups for the purpose of monitoring all phases of educational and training activities. Advises on new programs for the betterment of the construction industry. Works to make construction a career of choice.

Safety Committee: Educates and promotes safety to ABC members Promotes STEP Award Program; OSHA 10 & 30 hour programs; first-aid seminars; job site and shop safety awareness programs/seminars. Creates safety awareness among ABC membership. Fosters relationship with OSHA and regulatory agencies.

Marketing Committee: Conveys the philosophies and ethics of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of ABC to our members, prospective members, students, legislators and the community through communication and involvement. Works with other committees to enhance their programs. Improves the image of the Merit Shop construction industry.

Diversity Committee: Creates awareness and opportunities within minority communities for entry to a rewarding career within the construction industry.

Technology Committee: Researches changes to materials, techniques, trends and costs that affect the construction industry in order to develop strategies for informing and educating our members and their workforce.

Peer Groups: Identifies industry issues within each respective trade and gives direction to ABC for finding solutions. Seeks opportunities to promote construction as a career. Fosters relationships with other trade associations/organizations.
